Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Radical Red

America Canna_

I used to have a lot of Radical Reds in my garden, like this brilliant America Radica Red canna, but as I have aged I find my garden leaning toward the passive purple colors! This year I will be adding more silver colored plants to blend in and bring out the purples! The silver plants will go with my hair color! You know the old saying, “the longer you are married the more you and your spouse look alike”? Well I think that applies to my garden too!

Radical Red is a fluorescent red color introduced to the Crayola Line in 1990.

This post is just one of many in the Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola Challenge

“My Thoughts Exactly, Maeve!”

View from Ashford Castle, Cong, Ireland

View from Ashford Castle, Cong, Ireland

Today I thought I would post something for my favorite author ever, Maeve Binchy. She was the most popular Irish woman writer of all time and wrote books about the interactions of everyday people; just real people in real life. Maeve had advice about writing that I never forgot. Maeve passed away on July 30, 2012, but every year on St Patrick’s Day I write her a little something.

Maeve’s advice on writing.

Write like you talk, it is your voice.

She also wrote scenes in her books that were conversations she had overheard. One day she was so engulfed in a conversation by two women on a bus that she actually got off the bus, where they did, and followed them so she could hear the end of the conversation!

She was an excellent listener.

I have been going through my emails and letters to file for family history and came across this email I sent to my sister on Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 at 5:31pm. I thought Maeve would enjoy it too.

J, the November date is good.  Will you be here a week?

This weekend I made hamburger and hotdog buns, because we grilled out, cooked 21 servings of chili to put up and made two batches of pizza dough, because we ate pizza on Monday, and put up 20 more pounds of tomatoes.  I am trying to get ready for winter.

I slaved over the chili, soaking beans all night before hand and I have come to the conclusion that I don’t know beans about beans.  After soaking all night they were still hard, but I thought no problem because the six pounds of meat, with onions, green peppers, chili powder, paprika, tomato sauce and tomatoes will all cook down in the pressure cooker and the beans will soften up too. Wrong, I pressured the chili and it smelled so good, then when that was done I added the beans and just cooked them down like the recipe said.  For some reason because of the gas from the beans the recipe stated NOT to put them in the pressure cooker with the other ingredients.  The chili cooked down to nothing and those beans were as hard as ever.  SO then SB and I spent the rest of the day picking 3 pounds of cooked hard beans out of the chili!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess from now on I will use CANNED BEANS.  BUMMER!!!!!!,

The news of the day: Ghost hunters every year on the anniversary of a train accident in the 1860’s near Statesville, NC meet up at 430am on the train trestle where the train went over the trestle and killed 35 people.  Supposedly after the train accident a train conductor could be found on the track at this time of morning on the anniversary day, waving his lantern looking for the derailed train.  So ghost hunters have been showing up for years to see the train’s conductor.

This year was no exception.  A group of ghost hunters started walking the track one day last week at 430am.  Suddenly a real train came around the bend and since there is not a stop or anything else there, the conductor did not blow a whistle that the train was coming, nor was he looking for people on the track.  The ghost hunters were caught off guard and were running for their lives on the trestle.  Several jumped off the trestle when the train caught up to them and one man was run over by the train. He pushed his girlfriend off the trestle telling her “he loved her”  and then was ran over.  The others that jumped from the trestle are in intensive care with critical injuries, including the girl.  Now for several days there have been stories in the newspaper about how this episode will now become one of the ghost hunters legends too and they will be looking for the guy that got ran over.  Can you believe it? !!!!!!!!!

The book for our book club meeting this month is “Serena” and I have never read a book that from the first page git-go, I disliked the main character. A new first!

The relationship among the characters is not believable either.  I am learning about the Smoky Mountain National Park developers versus the timber industry. The mountain families were run off their land or became lumber jacks making little to no money to timber the trees.  The depression was going on and they lived horrible lives because they could so easily be replaced.  I hope it gets better, although I am half way through it and so far I am not impressed.  It is a chore to read and I have to have it read by next Wednesday.

How is K feeling?  S’s wrist/arm has held up in the cast. Today was the back surgery on SB’s mom.  She is in intensive care and in pain, following the surgery and he is on his way to see her.  HMMMM…..  If you are in pain in intensive care when you are so doped up I say you are in a pickle.  Just my two cents worth.  More later. c

Well Maeve, I hope this email has given you a good laugh and something to write about today, because I know you are still writing and the stories up there might be a little too goodie-two-shoes for you! And, you might have a buzz in your head trying to strain to hear all the conversations down here! So I am making it easy for you!

PS I also am sending you a photo I took at Ashford Castle in Cong, Ireland. It is still the greenest country in the world!

Sincerely, Cady

Weather Wednesday; I have a Plum tree in my front yard and it is beginning to leaf, Plum. So I got out there and took a photo with my IPhone! I love Spring, but the weather outlook, here in the south, goes from the 50’s (Winter) to the high 70’s (Spring) overnight. There is not a gradual warming up. So, I am now Plum ready for the high 90’s (Summer) which will start at the end of the month, right after Easter, or sooner!  I added a photo edited in the Waterlogue App on my IPhone for use as a Spring note card! Better get the photo since my tree thinks it is still Spring!

PS Thursday Weather Update: Today it was in the 80’s!

Enjoy the IPhriday Photo Challenge! Post a photo taken with your Phone on Fridays! It is great fun getting outside to see what is going on, even if you’re burning up on March 11th! But, I’m not complaining, I’m just HOT!

I’ve been walking the neighborhood looking for signs of spring. Not to be disappointed, here is what’s blooming in my neck of the woods! Camellias were named after Georg Josef Kamel, a Moravian Jesuit priest. Who knew? Raise your hand!

And then there is the Nest!

As usual I applied the Waterlogue App and Brushstroke App to make my notecards for Spring! I just love these Apps on my phone! I know, I know I say that every week, but it is so true!  I feel so artistic, because in real life, I can’t even draw stick men well! With these Apps just click and choose your look! I especially liked the look of the Brushstroke App on The Nest!  It really gives some character to that nest!

There used to be several painted benches around the two block Main Street of my town. Now since I have been getting out and exploring for the IPhriday Photo Challenge I see the painted benches are being replaced with wrought-iron benches with dedication markers. I went looking for the “LOVE” bench for a Valentine Post only to see it had been replaced. I got as far as Ben & Jerry’s before I saw the last two remaining painted benches hugging the exterior of the ice cream shop. It was as if they were saying,”no, don’t take us too!” So I thought I’d better get a quick photo snap before they are gone! The Good Ol Days are quickly being gobbled up!

As usual I painted my photo in the Waterlogue App and in Brushstroke, since they are my favorite IPhone Photo Apps! I’ll use the Waterlogue design photo for my notecard!

I live in a pastel neighborhood.  All the cottages are painted like Easter Eggs, except for two colors, which are allowed. Yes, we have to get permission to change our cottage colors! Anyway, the exception to the pastels are Navy Blue and Periwinkle, a lightish purple color.

I love using some of the IPhone Apps to change the way my pictures look.  I use some of my photos to make greeting or note cards. This photo, taken in January, turned out especially well for the look I wanted for my notecards. There are oodles of design choices to pick from in the Brushstroke App! I use AVERY products, which offers a bazoodle load of designs and sizes, including posters, business cards and any type of notecard! Follow the easy instructions and feed the card stock of choice into the printer and Whalla, a notecard, postcard, whatever card you want! You can use their graphics and add text or download your own pictures from your files, adding text or not. Then fold, write and mail! Done!

I hate this!!!  It is a piece of “artwork” that sits in the front of our small town post office. To me this is what gives “ART” a bad name. To most people observing it, it looks like junk taken from a junk yard and welded together. It was given to our fine village as a gift. Hmmmm…….. beware of free gifts I say. Of course we had to build a base for it to sit on and have a big ceremony to acknowledge such a fine gift. Spare me. Well I guess the good thing is we didn’t have to worry about it being an eyesore when it finally rusted, because it came to us rust and all. There is a program on Acorn TV (a channel of British TV which I love to watch) that is called “How To Read a Painting.”  Maybe there will be something on there about “How to Like a Piece of Rusted Junk”! Stay tuned!

I have shown the photo painted in the Watercolor App and the Brushstroke App too. I Loved the sky and tree branches in the Waterlogue App! But, Waterlogue couldn’t help this ugly art in the garden either! Blob that it is!  Brushstroke tried to make the most of it! As we all shall have to!

The Cheshire Cat Sits in My Tree!

The Cheshire Cat Sits in My Tree!

It poured here this week on Wednesday and I mean poured! So I went to the window to take a picture of my Woodland Garden and the big fat drops of water on the tree limbs. Much to my surprise when I focused in on the drops and processed the picture for the blog, a Cheshire cat with a very big smile appeared in the tree! He is to the left, sitting on the limb!  Can you see his big smile? AWESOME! Just another fun IPhone IPhriday week!

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Fern

My Fern

My Fern

Fern was added to the Crayola assortment in 1998. In the “State Crayon Collection” it is the color for South Carolina and known as Palmetto.

In 1908 Binney & Smith partnered with Littlefield Maps and made a special color assortment with special Biblical colors pasted on the back of the maps. The maps of the Old Testament teachings were sold to churches. I bet there were big ferns and palm trees to color on those maps with the color Fern!

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Eggplant

My Eggplant Colored Plant

My Eggplant Colored Plant

If I had my way, and I guess I do, my garden would be full of purple shades and lime green! I love the combination! This year I may add some silver plants. They look very interesting in the garden too.

Eggplant was added to the Crayola line in 1998. I was surprised to see that there are only 4 colors that start with the letter E in the Crayola collection and two of them are remakes, so there really are only 2!

  • Eggplant
  • Electric Green is an alternate name for Electric Lime used in Europe.
  • Electric Lime is a fluorescent color, introduced in 1990. Known as Electric Green in Europe.
  • English Vermilion or Vermillion was found in Crayola assortments from 1903 to 1935.
