There are over 50 shades of Brown. The shades of brown include auburn, burnt ember, camel, chestnut, chocolate, coffee, copper, maroon, sepia, seal brown, sandy brown and russet, just to name a few. I decided to go with chocolate for my brown color! Crayola also has a color to represent each state! Mississippi is the state for BROWN, naming it the Mississippi Mud Color. I guess I should have made a Mississippi Mud Cake! Here is the recipe! For my baking needs I go to King Arthur Flour. They sell 25 different kinds of chocolate for baking! How can you go wrong with that? Won’t you have a piece of fudge?

The Crayola color is Brick Red. Compared to the red bricks of the UK it’s a tad too red! I say always go to the source! I learned at Hampton Court Palace how to tell who laid the bricks. The Flemish bricklayers laid bricks of various shades and lengths all mixed together. The English bricklayers laid one row of short bricks then one row of long bricks. It’s good to know your bricks and bricklayers!

When I think of Blush, I am thinking of a light pink cheek. Crayola is thinking of a very, very, very, pink cheek! It must be the sun-kissed version of the standard Blush. Crayola’s version of Blush is more like a raspberry. Did you know that Crayola had eight multicultural crayons? Developed in 1992, the colors Apricot, Black, Burnt Sienna, Mahogany, Peach, Sepia, Tan, and White were colors that, “come in an assortment of skin hues that give a child a realistic palette for coloring their world.” No blush there!  Have you seen the Burnt Sienna color? It’s  a shade of orange! I have never seen an orange person, but what do I know? Wait, maybe I have. They are the people who spend too much time in a tanning booth!

I do not know what these flowers are. I think they are primroses. They were a beautiful iridescent Blue Violet! It was just one of thousands of beautiful plants that I saw in the English gardens on my English Garden Tour 2015! 

Just to let you know, I’ve been thinking of what I would do with the lottery money that now is up to over 1 billion. One of the things I would do is purchase a garden and lovely little cottage in the UK and hang out with gardening friends that know all the latin names of flowers. Perhaps they would have a class on such at the local Woman’s Institute meeting, for transplants like me, who would like to be in the know. I can only dream! Well, maybe I could start on one flower. If the flower shown is a primrose, it is called primula vulgaris. How could anything so beautiful be vulgar?

Blue Bell is a recent addition to the line of Crayola colors, only being added in 1998.

I want to think it was named after Blue Bell Ice Cream.

If you have lived in the South, you know there is only one ice cream for southerners, Blue Bell.

The Brenham Creamery Company was founded around the time of the Crayola startup, 1907, in Brenham, Texas. It opened originally to purchase excess cream from local dairy farmers and sell butter to the good folks of Brenham. In 1911, the creamery began to produce small quantities of ice cream. In 1930, Brenham Creamery Company was renamed Blue Bell Creameries after the Texas Bluebell, a wildflower native to Texas, and which like ice cream, thrives during the summer. They claimed, “the milk we use is so fresh it was only grass yesterday.”  As of 2015 Blue Bell is the fourth highest selling ice cream brand in the US. I could eat Bluebell Ice Cream for 120 days! Today, I thought I would combine the Crayola colors Black and Blue.  They are often combined aren’t they?

Blue has made the rounds in the Crayola collection. From 1903-1958 it was known as Blue. The same color was called Celestial Blue from 1935-1949 and from 1949-1958 it was called Azure Blue! I would like to have the job of naming colors at Crayola. I would say it is a steady job, wouldn’t you?

My black and blue photos are of the Crucufixion scene that is on the vineyard hillside in Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy. It was stunning especially at night. We were there in June and July. They must leave it up year round since the terrible floods that nearly washed away their village in 2011. The Black and the Blue. Here is a personal account of what happened that day.  Today, Vernazza is as beautiful as ever! The five villages of Cinque Terre are unforgettable!

Bittersweet

The Bittersweet color was added to the Crayola line-up in 1958. I was surprised to learn that the name was not used in the English language as a color until 1892.

We used to scour the hedgerows in the fall looking for bittersweet to make a lovely fall wreath. It brings back wonderful memories of Autumn in the Midwest! I love this color!

Beaver was introduced into the Crayola color line in 1998.

It is the color of the fur of a beaver. The first recorded use of beaver as a color name in English was in 1705.

To me, Beaver, represents multiple shades of brown! I waited FOREVER patiently to get a shot of that stork on the cottage!  I also loved the many brown shades in the photo of the photo of Windsor Castle!

Banana Mania was introduced to the Crayola collection in 1998.

Did you know that Crayola at one time offered Magic Scents Crayons?

In 1994, Crayola produced a 16-pack of crayons that released fragrances when used. By 1995, Crayola had to change some of the scents because of complaints from parents that some of the crayons smelled good enough to eat; like the Cherry, Chocolate, and Blueberry scented crayons. Eventually, crayons with food scents were retired in favor of non-food scents!

This photo was taken at my birthday week celebration at the Inn at Little Washington. It’s my birthday week! Not day, but week! The older one gets, the more one celebrates! Fabulous!
