Violet Red or is It Red Violet?

Day 110 into the 120 Days of Crayola Challenge and we are really being challenged! But, I’ve been doing my homework! There is no color called Violet Red! There is a color called Red Violet and we had that color back in the R’s. Been There Done That! See I’m paying attention!

Anyway, the weather has been acting like Spring this week; warm, cold, rain, cold, warm, blustery. Back and forth, so maybe the Challenge is also suffering the challenges of Spring! So I am showing another garden photo from my English Garden Tour. I want it to be summer!

These photos are from Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, near Cranbrook, Kent, UK. Can one ever get tired of Sissinghurst? I don’t think so. Sissinghurst, is a small village in the county of Kent in England. It was originally called Milkhouse Street, but changed it’s name in the 1850s, to avoid association with the smuggling and cockfighting activities of the Hawkhurst Gang. Day 109 in the Crayola Challenge! An English Cottage is the Perfect Place for Purple or is it Violet?

First there was Purple. Then in 1914 Crayola made Purple, Violet. Violet has transitioned through Violet 1, 2 and 3. There are more names for Violet in all the collections than I can shake a stick at! Violet has been called Bunch of Grapes Purple in the “So Big” set, Jellyfish Purple and Venus Violet, in the “Discovery ” series, Psychedelic Purple, in the “Retro Colors” set, Ravenous Purple, in the “Colors of Baltimore” series, Pike’s Peak Purple, the color for Colorado in the “State Crayon Collection” and Love & Purple in the 110th Anniverary set. Crayola loved their purples!

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Unmellow Yellow

Unmellow Yellow, Unmellow Orange, and Unmellow Green!

It is Day 106, I think, if I have done my math correctly, in the Crayola Challenge! Wow! Look at these guys! I’d say these plants have Unmellow Yellow, Unmellow Orange and Unmellow Green! And no leaves, just a stem! I think they are part of the Red Hot Poker family of plants. Correct me if I’m wrong! Wouldn’t this plant perk up any spot in the garden! I think so!

Here is another Unmellow Poke in the garden! These are surrounded by grassy spikes which sets them apart! I love the color combinations! Both these plants were found in the Hot Garden at Sissinghurst, home of Vita Sackville-West. For more information about Vita Sackville-West look Here! Unmellow Yellow is a fluorescent color that was introduced into the Crayola Collection in 1990. It is also known as Yellowstone in the “State Crayon Collection.”

Day 105 of the 120 Days of Crayola! Hey, we’re getting there! Today let’s look at the beautiful Turquoise Blue Ligurian Sea off the coast of Cinque Terre, Italy! The “Five Lands” are made up of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park. Over the centuries, the villagers have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, but cars cannot reach them from the outside. This is paradise on earth!

How About a Hike Up These Stairs!

The variation of house colors resulted when fishermen, doing their jobs just offshore, wanted to be able to distinguish their houses with ease! Most of the families in the five villages make money by catching fish and selling them in the small port villages. Fish is also their main source of food.

Part of the trail in the Cinque Terre National Park from Riomaggiore to Manarola is called the Via dell’ Amore or Love Walk. Here we see that locks have been placed on the fence line by romantic lovers. For more posts on beautiful Cinque Terre, just click on the tag in the list to the right!

Turquoise Blue was added to the Crayola lineup in 1935, but was only available in bulk until 1949, when it was added to the assortment of colors.

Walking around the neighborhoods the blooms are bloomin’! Here are some of my favorites for the IPhriday Photo Challenge. Bridal wreath spirea produces the loveliest arched boughs of highly scented flowers. In early to mid-spring, this perennial shrub produces clusters of tiny flower head blooms on cascading stems, looking much like a bride’s bouquet! Wouldn’t these color combinations be beautiful for a spring wedding? I’m making quite a collection of notecards with my IPhone Apps, Waterlogue and Brushstroke! Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Tumbleweed

Ok, It’s Day 104 of the Color Your World Challenge and we’re looking for Tumbleweeds! By definition, a Tumbleweed is a plant in a desert that breaks away from its roots and is blown across the ground by the wind. I like this photo, but I wanted to explore the Tumbleweed a little more so I found a site called Tumbleweed Tiny Houses!

You need a Tumbleweed Tiny House in yourTumbleweed landscape! Both the Tumbleweed landscape and the Tumbleweed Tiny House provide solitude, don’t you think? It makes it possible to breakaway from your roots. But what if you don’t want to breakaway?

Every retired parent should have this to live in, right in their children’s backyard! If the kids need to move, you can just roll away behind them! And I think they should pay for it too! It’s better than a nursing home, your children can keep an eye on you, and when you’re gone they have a backyard retreat! Perfect! I would never use the upstairs of the Tumbleweed Tiny House either, I wouldn’t be able to climb up there. Let the grandkids have overnights, I’d never leave the one comfy chair in that kitchen! I believe this could be my last tiny house! The size is right, not much to clean or dust, and it moves on wheels! What more could anyone want? But, why does it cost $61,000?

Tiny Houses are the rage here, especially in places like California, where home prices and apartment rental is so high. What do you think about this living plan? Could you live in a Tiny House?

Tumbleweed has been part of the Crayola lineup since 1993. It is known as Moon Rock and Squid Tan in the “Discovery Series,” and Boardwalk, the color for New Jersey in the “State Crayon Collection”.

Prison Door Inside Doge’s Palace, Venice, Italy

Today, let’s take a peek at some of the doors in Venice, Italy. I’ve been dreaming of sunny vacations for the past couple of weeks! Venice, Italy is one of those sunny, magical, dream come true spots on earth. But, it wasn’t so sunny for those who were sent to jail from the olden days until 1930.

This prison door has two big bolt locks and the peep window also has a lock! The door is narrow and one would have to be very short or stooped to get inside the cell. The cell is very small and windowless! The prison was attached to the Doge’s Palace, (the home of the ruling duke) by a passageway called the Bridge of Sighs, aptly named because you had to walk from the Doge’s Palace, where you were sentenced by a tribunal, over to the prison. It was your last look at the world, through a thick, marble, trellised window.

This is the Bridge of Sighs as it looks from the outside. There is a canal between the Doge’s Palace and the Prison.

To walk around Venice you follow very narrow pathways tucked between old buildings. You walk and suddenly the path comes to a dead end at a doorway! It’s easy to get lost or disoriented.

The buildings at the main intersections have arrows directing you to the most popular spots, so you know which way to go to the most familiar sites. Here to cross the street you look up!

The best way to get around quickly is by gondola! The doors are at water level! Just step outside your place into a gondola! For a post about my gondola experience look HERE! All the photos were taken at close up and personal gondola level!

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Tropical Rain Forest

Tropical Fruit with Coconut Ice Cream for a Tropical Rain Forest

I have never been to a Tropical Rain Forest, but if I did go, I would eat grilled fruit! Well, come to think of it, I like grilled fruit, and I don’t have to be in a Tropical Rain Forest to enjoy it!

I hate trying to think of things to eat every week! It is a real chore, as it seems you eat the same things over and over! Well I experiment a lot now by using an APP called Yummly! I love it because you can tailor the recipes to your particular food likes or dislikes. There are over 1 million recipes to choose from with gorgeous pictures and instructions. When you find a recipe you like you can save it and automatically add the ingredients to a grocery list. The most important feature for me is allowing me to see the recipe, on my list, that I have bought the ingredients for. I used to look through all my cookbooks for particular recipes, make a list, and then get home from the grocery store and not be able to remember what ingredient was for which recipe! Sometimes I couldn’t remember which book I had found the recipe in! What a senior moment! Now, even if I do not get the ingredients on the list, the ingredients do not go away and I can save them for another week and never lose the recipe either! You can look for recipes by Ingredients, Occasions, Tastes, Diets, Allergies, Nutrition, or Cuisine, just to name a few filters. If you wear an Up band you can save the calories and information of the meal to your band! You will know how many calories you consumed with any meal!

You can add other things to the list, like toilet paper, soap, all your staples or anything else, all added to one list. I LOVE this APP!

Summer is coming so it is time to grill fruit! Since I have not done a video for awhile I thought I would share a Grilled Watermelon Pizza recipe.

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Timberwolf Walkways

Day 102 of the 120 Days of Crayola is here! Today’s color is Timberwolf, a gray, brown, tanish color to be sure! These unique walkways were found in Montepuciano, Italy. Montepulciano is a hilltown and these are the shortcuts through the village, from the top of the village down to the lower village. Or you could take the road which circles the village, which is much longer! A little steep you think? At least there is a handrail! This is where I attended Il Sasso, the Italian Language School, one of the most memorable times I spent in Italy! For a short post about my experience at Il Sasso, look HERE!

Timberwolf is known as Old Man Granite Gray, the color for New Hampshire in the “State Crayon Collection.”

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola: Tickle Me Pink

Tickle Me Pink in Venice, Italy

Day 101 in the Crayola Challenge and today we are tickled pink! Are we excited because it is coming to an end? What a challenge! Or are we tickled pink because we have found so many of the colors? Or are we tickled pink because we have learned so much about the history of Crayola? It doesn’t take much to Tickle Me Pink! I like lots of things, mostly simple! But, I have loved everything about this challenge! I loved sorting through the photos looking for a particular color. I loved researching the history of the colors and the Crayola (Binney &Smith’s) beginnings. I loved learning how much the crayons have influenced our learning skills! So much to be Tickled Pink about!

My photos today were taken in Venice, Italy! Even the street lights are Pink!

Tickle Me Pink has been a Crayola color since 1993. It is also known as Pulsar Pink in the “Discovery” series, Scruffy Pink in the Hallmark “Ugly Duckling” set, Hedgehog Pink in the Hallmark “Mouse and Mole” set, Giselle’s Pink Dress in the Hallmark “Tales of the Tooth Fairy” set AND Wild Prairie Rose as the color for North Dakota in the “State Crayon Collection.” Whew that’s a lot of pink!
