Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Tan

Day 100 in the Crayola Challenge and we are looking for Tan? Tan????? I was hoping for something outlandish here! But Tan it is! Tan, added to Crayola in 1958, is also known as Sandy Beach in the “Discovery Series,” and Grand Canyon, the color for Arizona, in the “State Crayon Collection.”

My photo is of a Doge Death Mask from Venice, Italy. It can be seen in the Doge’s Palace. The seat of the Doge was initiated in 726. While the Doge, or military leader, had great power he was constantly under strict surveillance. He had to wait for other officials to be present before opening dispatches from foreign powers and he was not allowed to possess any property in a foreign land. The Doge ruled for life (although some were forcibly removed from office) After the Doge’s death an inquisitori passed judgement on his acts and if anything improper was found, compensation would be taken from the Doge’s estate. I like that idea, and wish it could be applied to our government officials today!

Sun Going Down Over Budapest, Hungary

I could only find one Orange Sunset in all my pictures, but I like it. This is Budapest, Hungary in the evening light! It is Day 99 in the Crayola Challenge! We’re counting the days down!

Sunset Orange, added to Crayola in 1997, is also known as Panhandle Paintbrush and is the color for Oklahoma in the “State Crayon Collection.”

Welcome to Day 98 in the Crayola Challenge! Today we are getting some sun and a glow! We are in Venice, Italy! What more could you ask for to get a glow? The sun is right, the colors are right and the mood is right!

Sunglow is a fluorescent color, introduced in 1990. It is known as Bee-Utah-ful, the color for Utah in the “State Crayon Collection.”

IPhriday Photo Challenge: Icicle Cottage

The Icicle Cottage

About two weeks ago I featured The Green Cottage and said I would be showing more of my favorite landmarks. This is the Icicle Cottage to everyone in my family. It is one of the best preserved and charming Victorian cottages anywhere. Built by John Eli Brattain around 1883 notice the “gingerbread” trim on this home. My family always called this trim “icicles”. Mr Brattain was a woodworker by trade and the trim was cut by hand, so no two pieces of Icicle trim is the same.

I also love the HUGE tree in the front garden and the yellow climber that has overtaken the tree on its way to the top! This tree is a show stopper in the Spring!

It’s Day 97 of the Crayola Challenge and we’re looking for Spring Green! I didn’t have to look very far for this color that was introduced in 1958. These big, chartreuse colored blooms are aptly named Snowballs! Aren’t they beautiful? As you can see I’ve been at the pretend easel again in the garden!

Ville de Québec, Canada

No 87! This is my favorite door photo along the Quartier Petit Champlain, one of the shopping and restaurant areas in Quebec City, Canada! There are lots of interesting highlights in the picture; the royal blue of the door, the different colors and textures of the plants, en masse! But, what I found most quirky about this photo was the stone head of a child, possibly that of a very young sailor, just outside the window on the top left. Also, there were the makings of candles hanging out to dry! And doesn’t that lamp light look like it’s in a fog? A beautiful and eerie door venue! It is set in Vieux Quebec, the oldest section of the city dating back to the 1600’s. The shops are narrow, attached to one another, and made of stone.

As you approach the end of the row of shops, there is #87. At one time it might have been a shop, but now it has decided to be a residence, tucked away behind all those luscious plants. It looks like the old stones were taken out of the structure and made into new steps to reach the door. Now part of the building is brick and the other side a stucco of sorts. I wonder if they will be doing artwork on that side? Many of the older buildings have been given a facelift and the artwork is the highlight of the building!

Here, in this photo if you look in the middle of the photo there is a stairway and a door painted on! The old, blending perfectly with the new!

Color Your World: 120 Days of Color; Sky Blue

A Garden Gate with Sky Blue at Sissinghurst Garden, Kent, UK

Taking pictures through a garden gate, a door, or a window is one of my favorite ways to take a photo! Today’s garden gate and very blue sky was taken at Sissinghurst, family home of Vita Sackville-West. If you ever want to visit a beautiful garden in Kent, this would be one to see! For a peek at Sissinghurst look HERE! So for today the Sky’s the Limit!

Did you know that Blue is the most popular crayola color? There are a lot of blues to like too! Sky Blue as been part of the Crayola Collection since 1958. It is also known as Peacock Blue in the “So Big” set, and both Caribbean Sea and Milky Way in the “Discovery” series. My favorite, for this color is, Sky’s the Limit Blue, found in the special “Colors of Binney & Smith” set. And, it is the color to represent Montana in the “State Crayola Collection.

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; 50 Shades of Silver

When I was in the UK doing my Garden Tour I fell in love with Grey/Silver plants and foliage. The garden of Vita Sackville-West at Sissinghurst, had an entire garden devoted to these colors!

Other gardens had the silver plants here and there, mingling with the hot, red and yellow flowers or used as blenders with the blue. I have decided this year to add silver foliage and flowers to my garden as well. Maybe I’ll end up with 50 shades of Silver! When you start looking for these plants there are lots out there to pick from! I think I will be starting with my favorite Sea Holly! Then add Snow in Summer, (a ground cover) Dusty Miller, Lamb’s Ears, and more Lavender, called Lavender Cotton. I think I grow that already in a pot. You can see these plants Here!

In the end I may end up looking like this gal!

The Silver Gal

Silver is a metallic color that was first offered in the Crayola Collection from 1903 until 1915. Then it was offered only in bulk until 1944 and then in assortments from 1944 until 1949. It was also known as Harbor Lights in the “Colors of Baltimore” series and Ghostly Silver in the Halloween Crayon sets. My favorite, is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, a silver color in the “Discovery” series.

Ultra Pink was the name of a bright pink color in the Crayola Collection. Then it all went decidedly down hill from there, if you ask me! From 1972 until 1990 Ultra Pink was known as Shocking Pink. Then it was known as Plug & Play Pink in the “Techno Brite” series! What in the world is that?

So I’m sticking to a nice Ultra Pink color that looks on the purpley side in nature, and that may be shocking. But the Eastern Redbud Tree, as it is named, is actually a pinky-purpley color! Shocking to say the least, but oh so beautiful to look at! It is one of the first trees to flower in early spring, blooming huge pink flowers in large clusters right on the bark of the limbs of the tree! A Shocking Pink that is such a boost to any garden!

During this period of ultra, shocking, and plug and play pinks, Crayola also decided to buy the Silly Putty Company. I’d say that fits right in! Do you remember copying the funny paper onto your Silly Putty? Now those were the days! The Silly Putty history was so fascinating look for a full blog post to come!

Color Your World: 120 Days of Crayola; Shamrock

Irish Shamrock Plant

You know the old saying, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Well so are the Shamrocks, so to speak! I love this green colored Irish Shamrock plant along my neighbors fence line. They remind me of the real deal Shamrock.

In my garden they look like this! I have the Purple Shamrock Plant!

Shamrock has been in the Crayola Collection since 1993. It is known as Circuit Board Green in the Techno Brite series and US Mint in the “Colors of Washington, DC” series.
